Better 3d

I am a 3d designer and i feel like a bird without wings when working on 3d for layar environment. :-)

I wondered a lot of changes, but i will be happy with one or several of this features:

  • Most faces per POI. The actual limit of 5000/500 its too little
  • Support for bump/normal mapping
  • Support of animated objects
  • Exporter plugin for 3d softwares, such 3d studio, Blender, Maya...

And this is all, thanks!

What about the ideas of Kodjo Kouwenhoven, he said:

"I have some whishes too:

- It would be nice to walk around an object. This is not possible yet as the objects are not anchored to the ground.

- The groundlevel seems not to be on the ground. Very annoying.

- Besides that, 3D objects are the same size when near or far away. This does not help the 3D experience."

I have the same ideas to improve user experience.

Hi All,

When it comes to the 3D animations: That will be part of Layar 5.0!!! You can use this documentation on our wiki to add animation to your 3D models

Well i guess there is no exact "absolute" limits, those are just to be defined to fit the use of the Layer (ie number of times a model is going to be drawn, which kind of phone is more likely to use the layer depending on the content, etc...) for now as long as I know about layar technologie, with the L3D format a good new phone (like a Iphone4G/GalaxyS or even a HTC heros-like) could easily handle 10000+ polygons models, but for next animated content everything will depend on the kind of model/technologie used.

Cheers

Hi Maurice,

Thanks for your answers. I checked the Layar Digital Office and i like it. I have a similar idea in mind.

For the other questions here are the answers:

  • Support for bump/normal mapping
Could you explain how you would like to see this feature implemented?
The bump mapping is for add detail at the lowpoly 3d models. It simulate the rugosity of a surface. I would like have my 3d models with texture in both, difusse (color) channel and bump (rugosity) channel. Would be two separate image files or one image file with alpha channel for the bump.

  • Support of animated objects
What kind of animations would you like us to support?
I keep in mind simply loop transformations in my models: translation, rotation and scale. For example to make differences on POIs, such a "jumping euro symbol" for the banks and a "flying airplane" for travels agencies.
Any other kind of animations, such objects deformations or character animations, are welcome. :-)

Thanks,

Miguel Cid

Hi Miguel and Vvoous,

You can find the answers inline.

  • Most faces per POI. The actual limit of 5000/500 its too little
This is not the real limit but more a guideline. As a developer you also need to thing about the user experience when it comes to loading 3D objects on a mobile device. We strongly recommend to use this suggested limit because this will optimize the user experience. But feel free to experiment with it. A good example of pushing the boundaries of 3D is the new 3D layer which is called Layar Digital Office

Hi All!

as Miguale i have an interest in 3D layar development ,

but i don't know the "roof" (the real limit) wich could be reached.

i mean number of pol's & real size of the model.

thanks!
