As developers, it would be nice to be able to set the default view that appears when Layar opens. We have a client that would like it's customers to see the "Map View" then, when the user is close to their stores, switch to camera view to utilize augmented reality.
We have a client that has 1300 stores across the USA. They used a test group to get the feedback from their users and the overwhelming response is "I don't understand". Switching to the map view for this client makes sense, but since we don't have this option, we are forced to build on another platform unless this can be resolved quickly. This is very frustrating. It seems logical that in some cases the user would use the camera view once close to a POI but not from the other side of town. It almost seems dangerous to show an object across town and expect someone to follow the camera view to get there.
Can we please allow the developers the option to choose the default view based on the clients needs? I believe having the option will allow developers to continue and meet the needs of their clients as they develop on Layar - as developers, we need to meet the requests of our clients - It would be nice to have this added option to prevent developers from looking elsewhere.
Thanks for your consideration,
Jamie

I added a direct link to my Layar app in the android store, and I hear people are uninstalling the app (about 35%), because they don't understand it when they open it and they the camera turns on. I think people will get used to AR easier when they can step in on their own level.
So please reconsider your decision. Or we would have to switch to more user friendly apps.
The power of Layar is to NOT be an other app.
I keep thinking this is a MAJOR request. Not all localised POIs need to be displayed trough the camera view.

Hello Xuan,
I understand you want to keep the user consistent experience, but maybe we could still have this feature and say :
If the developper decided to make "map veiw" as default screen, then the user will be prompted "you will see the AR via map, and you can still switch to "camera view" via the "parameters option".
I think the camera view is really not needed for certain layers. (like simple localisation) And many users to not expect anything special when they are not big mobile fans, just normal users.
What do you think ?
Thanks !
Hello Everyone,
We know that some of you wanted this feature for quite some time. However, I am afraid that I have to turn you down. :(
We want to give our users a consistent experience so that they know what to expect. As part of this experience in the Layar Reality Browser, we want to drive users to use the ARView and educate them on what AR is.
How can you accomplish your goal:
1) In your JSON Response, you can send a message to the user as a tip to switch to the Map or List Views for certain reasons.
2) Use the Layar Player SDK for iPhone to fully control the experience. You can start the user a different view custom to your app and link to the ARView.
Best Regards,
The Layar Team
It would be very useful to have this as an option in the layer definition
